The History and Heart of Valentine’s Day is a five-lesson mini unit for middle grades that examines the holiday through multiple subject areas. Students explore the history of Valentine’s Day, the meaning behind its symbols, the difference between the symbolic heart and the real human heart, poetry connected to the holiday, the science of emotion and the brain, and the modern business of Valentine’s Day—including related career connections and creative art activities.

This mini unit is part of Digestible Discoveries, Learning Integrated’s monthly, magazine-style unit studies designed to deliver short, integrated lessons that fit naturally into a homeschool routine.

What This Mini Unit Includes

This free mini unit includes 5 complete lessons, designed to be used over one week.

Each lesson weaves together:

  • History — the origins and evolution of Valentine’s Day and its traditions
